Legacy Isle’s sights set on Gold Cup glory
…Crichton trainee aims for ‘Win and You’re In’ berth in Mouttet Mile
Legacy Isle’s victory in the None Such Sprint Trophy on Saturday, September 6, 2025, has cemented his status as a top-tier sprinter at Caymanas Park. His impressive speed, skill, and consistency have made him a formidable competitor on the track.
As Legacy Isle’s trainer, Rohan Crichton is looking to the future. He has big plans for the talented five-year-old American-bred bay horse. The ultra-rich Mouttet Mile in December was always the main target, but Crichton’s immediate focus was on the Gold Cup on October 4.
The Gold Cup is a “Win and You’re In” qualifier for the Mouttet Mile, offering automatic entry to the December showdown. Crichton was determined to get Legacy Isle razor-sharp for the Gold Cup, hoping to secure a spot in the Mouttet Mile.
“I am satisfied with his performance,” Crichton said, reflecting on Legacy Isle’s dominant win.
“I’m not worried about the time he ran, either. I’m just happy that he came out on top. We didn’t win the last time, so we gave him a little time. Now, we’re hoping to get him razor-sharp for the Gold Cup, which is a win and you’re in for the Mouttet Mile. That’s what our next focus is on,” Crichton affirmed.
Despite the absence of strong contenders Desert of Malibu and Wall Street Trader from the None Such Sprint Legacy Isle didn’t disappoint, delivering a spectacular performance that showcased his exceptional talent. Ridden by Raddesh Roman, Legacy Isle slammed rivals by 3 ½ lengths in the Graded Stakes/Open Allowance contest over 6 six furlongs, and stopping the clock in 1:12.0 (22.4 x 46.2 x 58.3).
“The race lost a little bit of its competitiveness when Desert of Malibu plus Wall Street Trader who beat us the last time couldn’t make it. Nonetheless, it is a part of the process again and I was happy with how he ran today. He was smooth, he switched his lead, and everything was good,” Crichton said.
“I was watching Raddesh [Roman] and he didn’t look worried during the race. He was comfortable, he didn’t start to ride, and so I figured he had a lot of horse and so I wasn’t really worried about anything,” he added.
The outcome of the race was pretty much all but certain shortly after the gates burst open. Legacy Isle and Pack Plays, ridden by Shane Richardson, engaged in a fierce battle for the lead, neck-and-neck, as they pulled away from the rest of the field.
As they approached the half-mile (800m) mark, Roman gave Legacy Isle a notch more freedom, and the talented horse quickly responded. He coupled up seamlessly and began to assert his dominance, rapidly opening up a significant gap over Pack Plays.
At the top of the stretch, Legacy Isle unleashed a breathtaking display of speed, effortlessly claiming ahead of Is That A Fact, ridden by Shaheem Gordon, and Pack Plays in his wake.
Roman spoke highly of Legacy Isle.
“He is a very nice horse. He has his fair share of issues but the trainer took his own time with him trying to sort him out and he is coming around nicely. I just hope he gets over his problems and keep sound,” Roman said.
Roman said he wasn’t concerned during the race, as he had confidence in the horse’s abilities.
“I was pretty easy while the rider aboard Pack Plays was trying to keep up. I was just holding my horse. Legacy Isle’s response in the stretch was impressive and I was pleased with the win,” he said.
