Pretty Perfect’s late surge stuns field in Winston ‘Fanna’ Griffiths OD Classic
In a thrilling finish at Caymanas Park on September 7, 2025, Pretty Perfect, a talented three-year-old bay filly trained by Gary Subratie, emerged victorious in the $3.75-million Winston “Fanna” Griffiths OD Classic. Despite facing challenges early in the race, jockey Dane Dawkins’ confidence in Pretty Perfect proved well-founded as she made a remarkable late surge to cross the finish line first.
As the gates opened, Pretty Perfect found herself well off the pace, and things seemed to go awry at the half-mile mark. However, Dawkins remained calm and focused, trusting in the filly’s ability to deliver. And deliver she did, as Pretty Perfect unleashed a powerful burst of speed in the final stretch, catching rivals on the wire.
The crowd erupted in cheers as Pretty Perfect crossed the finish line in 2:06.0, with Alchemy of Souls (Clive Lynch) finishing second just a half-length behind, and Woman In Love (Raddesh Roman) taking third place a length further back. Dawkins, who had ridden Pretty Perfect with precision and skill, was thrilled with the win.
“Well, the trainer put on the visor and said she is going to be a little bit sharper than the last time. He [Gary Subratie] told me I must go and ride my own race but make sure I am not too far behind the field at the half-mile,” Dawkins said.
As the race unfolded, Dawkins said he found himself a bit behind the pace, but he remained focused on getting Pretty Perfect into a better position.
“Leaving the half-mile, I was bit behind the pace, and at that point, the only thing on my mind was to get my horse in a better position and ask her to run because when the sand was hitting her in her face she was holding up her head. So I had to just keep her on the outside and ride up the straight,” he explained.
“When I reached half-furlong out to the winning post, I saw that I had the race covered, and so I just kept my momentum and it went through. I was very confident in victory,” Dawkins added.
