War of words
JLP, PNP in post-election verbal clash
A week after Jamaicans voted in the country’s 19th general election since 1944, the two major political parties engaged in a verbal joust over the process that resulted in the ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) being re-elected for a third-consecutive term.
The first salvo was fired by the Opposition People’s National Party (PNP), which made claims of vote-buying, voter suppression, and intimidation at a mid-morning news conference.
That sparked a hurriedly called press conference by the JLP which labelled the PNP’s claims as baseless and advised the Opposition to reflect on its shortcomings, instead of blaming the electoral process.
