Disappointment for Megan Tapper as injury ends World Champs dream
National 100m hurdles champion Megan Tapper will not get an opportunity to compete at the World Athletics Championships, after suffering a Grade 1B strain in her hamstring.
Though considered a relatively minor injury, Tapper does not have enough time to recover before the start of the 100m hurdles competition in Tokyo, ending the 31-year-old’s campaign for a first medal at the championships.
The athlete is devastated by the development but is remaining positive.
“I sustained a grade one hamstring strain, and after consulting with my medical team, we’ve decided that the best step is to prioritize recovery and protect my long-term health and career,” Tapper told the Jamaica Observer. “While I am deeply disappointed not to represent Jamaica on this occasion, I am incredibly proud of the journey to this point and the unwavering support I’ve received.”
Tapper has put together an impressive season, taking top spot at the National Senior Championships and lowering her personal best to 12.34 seconds.
Kerrica Hill was named as the alternate for the women’s 100m hurdles but it’s unclear whether or not there was enough time to call her to replace Tapper.
