A Botanical Marvel
(Part 2)
Style Observer Gardening (SOG) continues its exploration of Marcia Scott’s spectacular garden where her jaw-dropping collection of orchids, bromeliads, and more, reside. What quickly becomes evident however, is the effort involved in maintaining this botanical haven.
Scott credits the meticulous upkeep to her gardener, Carlton Allen, whom she describes as a true partner in sustaining her oasis. “He will cut, prune, water, and spray the orchids to keep them healthy,” she informs. “While I also contract a specialist for the orchids, he examines each plant for problems and applies the requisite remedy. That is a big part of the maintenance. Plus, weekly watering and spraying.”
Scott finds comfort not only in the beauty of nature but, too, the sanctuary she has created.
“I spend so much time gardening,” she says. “I love moving my plants around to create a different look — it’s important to me to get everything in the right spot so that when I step back and survey it, I can appreciate its full beauty.”
Suffice to say, the garden is more than a mere hobby; it’s a source of peace. “My garden calms my soul,” she shares. “When I’m in a bad mood, I retreat [to it] and immediately find peace… It is a calming source for me.”
It would have been remiss of SO to leave without soliciting advice from Scott on creating one’s own green space. Her matter-of-fact response elicits a smile. “ A garden is a reflection of its owner; personality is key to curating the haven one desires… it’s a personal thing.. I can come over and help you find plants, but you have to know what you like and how to maintain them. I can’t put my personality into someone else’s garden because they may not like what I like. Ultimately, each person has to decide which species they prefer to elevate their space.”
It might be easier to just move in, SOG responds as we reluctantly bid a fond adieu.
