Home comforts as Chapelton welcome Junglists in JPL
HIGH-RIDING Chapelton Maroons will be gunning to extend their club record start to the Jamaica Premier League to four consecutive wins when they take on Arnett Gardens at Turner’s Oval in Clarendon in one of five games scheduled today.
After struggling early last season, Chapelton have gotten off to the best start in the league so far and will face an Arnett team coming off their first win of the season.
Also today, Racing United will also be seeking to maintain a perfect win record when they play away to Treasure Beach, while Mount Pleasant and defending champions Cavalier will meet in a repeat of the last three finals in the second game of a double-header at Drax Hall.
Chapelton will be seeking their first win against Arnett who are coming off a 5-2 win over Harbour View after losing their first two games, conceding eight goals in the process.
Rushike Kelson has scored in all three games played so far and will be expected to lead the Arnett team with Fabian Reid, who scored twice in his first start of the season, against Harbour View.
Chapelton have been consistent and will enjoy ‘home comfort’ at Turner’s Oval as they hope veteran Andrew Vanzie and Marcos Roas Filho will be able to get the better of the Arnett defence.
Racing United rested last weekend as their game against Mount Pleasant was rescheduled, and they face promoted Treasure Beach FA who are unbeaten at home.
The Anthony Patrick-coached Racing United have been consistent with good wins against Arnett and Waterhouse and will start favourites against Treasure Beach, with Giovanni Cunningham and Tajay Grant expected to be on the hunt for goals.
Both Mount Pleasant and Cavalier had slow starts but a fierce contest will be expected as the top two clubs in the country always bring out the best in each other.
Cavalier are in eighth place on four points from three games while Mount Pleasant are further down in 11th place on two points from their two games played.
The teams have won against each other once in their last three meetings in the regular season while Cavalier won the final 6-5 on penalties after a 0-0 draw.
Cavalier have scored just three goals so far, and Coach Rudolph Speid will hope he can replace the contributions from Jalmaro Calvin and Dwayne Atkinson — their top scorers last season — who are now playing overseas.
Mount Pleasant have added last season’s top scorer Warner Brown to their team but they have failed to spark so far as Shaquille Bradford leads them with two goals.
Mount Pleasant’s issues could be their defence, which so far has been unable to hold a lead, as they led Montego Bay United 1-0 but went behind 2-1 and had to scramble to get a 2-2 draw. They then led Molynes United for only five minutes as they ended 1-1.
Montego Bay United (MBU) have had the better of Tivoli Gardens, beating the west Kingston team five times from their last seven meetings, including getting by them in the quarter-finals last season. They are hoping for another win when they meet at the Montego Bay Sports Complex at 7:00 pm.
MBU are unbeaten so far with two wins and a draw and are coming off a win at Dunbeholden last Sunday, while Tivoli Gardens got their first win of the season against promoted Spanish Town Police (STP).
Portmore United will seek to rebound after their loss to Chapelton when they play STP in the first game at Drax Hall.
STP have lost all three games played so far and have scored a single goal — a splendid free kick against Tivoli Gardens — while Portmore have won and drawn and are play-off contenders.
