KC rout KT 8-1 in Manning Cup
DEFENDING champions Kingston College (KC) rattled up their second-consecutive win, dismissing Kingston Technical High 8-1 in their ISSA/Wata Manning Cup Zone B match at Deanery Road yesterday.
Both Deshawn “Ruto” Byfield and Otaivian Halloway grabbed hat-tricks and will collect $50,000 each from associate sponsors KFC as they continue their 50th anniversary celebrations. The players will also get $10,000 in meals.
Byfield opened the scoring in the 11th minute and got further goals in the 45+2 and 58th minutes, taking his tally to four from two games.
Halloway, who plays on the right, scored his hat-trick in the 36th, 52nd and 75th minutes, while Tajay Fletcher netted in the 23rd minute for his first goal of the season.
Shareef Ricketts continued his penalty scoring form, netting from the spot in the 73rd minute, following up on his double penalty in KC’s 3-0 win over Charlie Smith on the opening day.
Chevon Lindo scored a consolation goal for Kingston Technical in the 39th minute as the home team crumbled to their second defeat of the season.
Champions KC have now scored 11 goals in two games, and it could have been much more against a weak Kingston Technical team as the Famed Purples squandered a number of chances to take the figure into double digits.
In fact, Byfield, who is leading the line for KC, could have had two hat-tricks and missed the chance to walk away loaded from KFC.
But he might have a mitigating factor as the hard, dry and bumpy playing surface was not conducive for football, a crucial factor that the organisers have to look at if they really want to develop the beautiful game.
KC, under the astute coaching of Vassell Reynolds, utilised the long ball to great effect, getting behind the KT backline led by Captain Dejaun McLean.
Byfield, Halloway, Fletcher, Kamaul Patterson, Raje Ximinez and Benjamin Rhooms were too hot to handle as they ran out easy winners.
Reynolds said it was not a total package in terms of performance but it is early days yet.
“What I did is ask the boys to try and improve their individual games from the first game, and I thought a couple of them did that,” Vassell told the Sunday Observer.
“We will accept this result, and it’s early days yet. We’re focusing on accumulating the points and improving individuals going forward.”
KC, with their second win, moved to six points and atop of Zone B, ahead of Tivoli Gardens also on six points following their 2-1 win over Charlie Smith who was losing their second-straight game and remained pointless.
The game between Jose Marti and Tarrant High was not played because of a clash of colours.
Meanwhile, many-time champions Jamaica College (JC) kicked off their campaign with a 7-0 mauling of St Mary’s College in Zone C, while St Andrew Technical High School trounced Edith Dalton James 7-2.
Camperdown High won the East Kingston derby, beating Vauxhall High 2-1, and joined JC and STATHS on three points.
On Friday, Greater Portmore High and Spanish Town High battled to a 1-1 draw and a share of the points.
