Mojito prime for Kenneth Mattis Memorial Trophy
AFTER a strong second-place finish behind Pack Plays on last at the races, Mojito should be more than comfortable to put rivals in their place in the $1.25-million Kenneth Mattis OD Memorial Trophy feature at Caymanas Park this afternoon.
Trained by Hall of Famer Richard Azan, Mojito showed good signs of form when finishing a length and a quarter behind Pack Plays in the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission Trophy over five and half furlongs on August 1. He steps down to contest this trophy and does so in fine fettle.
The last time Mojito ran at this Overnight Allowance level was on March 23 of this year, and he was an easy
three- and-three-quarter-length winner over seven furlongs (1,400m) at that time. With good training and form Mojito seems poised to leave his rivals behind and claim victory.
The three-year-old and upward contest is positioned as the ninth and final event on the card with a post time of 5:30 pm, but the first race is at 12:05 pm.
Mojito is the clear favorite but, as we all know, racing can be unpredictable. Unspun and Neo Star could potentially capitalise on any misstep from Mojito, making this a potentially exciting contest.
Unspun’s recent performances haven’t been impressive, with three dismal efforts, however he’s considered talented enough to turn things around. The Alford Brown trainee has been training well and is expected to put up a good fight.
It’s uncertain whether he’ll show up strong on the day and challenge Mojito for the top spot. Given Unspun’s potential and current training form, it’ll be interesting to see how he performs against
Mojito.
Neo Star, trained by Anthony Nunes, is looking to turn his fortunes around in this race. After four unsuccessful attempts in higher classes — with his last three performances being particularly disappointing — Neo Star has shown promising form in his recent exercises. This improvement suggests he might finally deliver a strong performance and make a notable impact in the competition. Given his trainer’s expertise and Neo Star’s potential, he’ll likely be a horse to watch in this event
