Tokyo 2025: Knight and Salmon through to 400m hurdles semis
Jamaica’s two representatives in the women’s 400m hurdles were comfortable qualifiers for the semi-finals after the first round at the Tokyo World Athletics Championships on Monday.
Andrenette Knight and Shiann Salmon are the only Jamaicans in the event after two-time World Championships bronze medalist Rushell Clayton was forced to withdraw with injuries.
Knight ran 53.74 seconds in her heat, beaten by American Anna Cockrell (53.66 seconds) with Portugal’s Fatoumata Binta Diallo third with 54.54 seconds and Daniela Ledecka of Slovakia also advancing with 54.86 seconds.
Salmon, a finalist at last year’s Olympic Games in Paris, ran a season’s best 54.21 seconds, just behind the USA’s Dalilah Muhammad who won with 53.80 seconds, while Panama’s Gianna Woodruff was third with 54.60 seconds and Italy’s Rebecca Sartori next with 55.11 seconds.
The top four in each of the five heats along with the next four fastest qualifies for the semi-finals.
