Tokyo 2025: Nickisha Pryce leads Jamaican trio into 400m semis
All three Jamaican women, led by national champion and national record holder Nickisha Pryce, advanced to the semifinals of the women’s 400m at the Tokyo World Athletics Championships after competing in the first round Sunday.
Pryce got off to a fast start and cruised to a win in 49.91 seconds, beating Norway’s Henriette Jaeger- 50.12 seconds, and Cuba’s Roxana Gomez who ran a season’s best 50.35 seconds.
Stacey-Ann Williams ran a personal best 49.59 second, under the previous best 50.00 seconds that she ran last year, and is now the eighth best Jamaican woman over the distance, just behind Grace Jackson and ahead of Novlene Williams Mills.
Dejanae Oakley, who was participating in her first major global championships, was third in her heat in 51.07 seconds, behind Lieke Klaver of Netherlands who ran 50.32 seconds and American Isabela Whittaker- 50.82 seconds.
