Kishane says back-to-back silver medals signal greater things to come
TOKYO, Japan — Sprinting powerhouse Kishane Thompson secured his second silver medal at a major championships when he followed countryman Oblique Seville to the line in a Jamaican quinella during the men’s 100m final at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Sunday.
Seville won in a personal best time of 9.77 seconds, finishing ahead of Thompson who clocked 9.82 and Noah Lyles, who crossed the line in 9.89 seconds.
Thompson, while admitting that he would obviously have preferred to win the gold medal, was satisfied with his efforts this season and believes these have set him up for even greater things in the future.
“It was a really good race — the competition was stacked. I enjoyed myself; nevertheless, I wanted to win. I didn’t win but I enjoyed myself and now we just move forward,” said Thompson who was following up from the silver medal he won at the Olympic Games last year.
Two major international silver medals after a mere 44 races as a professional is a pretty remarkable return for the 24-year-old who pointed to getting over his past fitness issues and now completing a full season as major milestones in his development.
Sunday’s 100m final was his 18th start this season. Last year was his next best as a senior, with nine races.
“My 2025 season was a really exceptional season. It has been a season, it has been a season! It’s the longest I have competed — I have never run so many races in my life. Everyone knows my typical story, which is not really so typical, of being held back because of injury, but I am really grateful,” said Thompson. “I got a lot of battle experience running with these two [Seville and Lyles] and all the other competitors so I am super grateful. It allows me to know how much more capable I am — and I am learning bit by bit.”
