Train gate operator killed while on duty in Clarendon
CLARENDON, Jamaica — The Clarendon police are probing the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting of a train gatekeeper at a railway station in the parish Saturday morning.
According to the police, the deceased, 35-year-old Vincent Clarke, a train gate operator was shot while on duty about 3:20 am at the railway crossing at Gravel Hill District in Milk River.
It was reported that Clarke was on duty along with a co-worker when the incident happened. Immediately after closing the gates to allow a train to pass, he was reportedly attacked by two men who opened gunfire at him. He ran but was chased and killed while his colleague managed to escape on foot in the area, the police said.
This led to a halt in the operations at the location as on the return of the train, there was no personnel to operate the gates.
The police were alerted and upon their arrival found Clarke’s body in a dirt track several metres away from the train gate with what appeared to be gunshot wounds.
He was taken to the hospital where death was confirmed.
