McGrath, Old Harbour meet for Zone J supremacy today
McGrath High and Old Harbour High will put their perfect win records on the line today when they meet in an ISSA daCosta Cup Zone J top-of-the-table clash at McGrath High in Linstead at 3:30 pm.
Goal difference separates the two teams that have won both their opening games, without conceding a goal in the process and at least the lead will be at stake as they meet in the first round for the first time since the 2011 season.
Twelve teams with at least two wins will be seeking to extend their perfect starts today, five of which will be going after a fourth-straight win.
Maldon High, Alphansus Davis High, Christiana High, Ocho Rios High and Port Antonio have all won their first three games while defending champions Garvey Maceo Technical, Glenmuir High, Manning’s School, Petersfield High, Cedric Titus High and William Knibb Memorial are hoping to make it three in a row.
McGrath High who played in their first ever daCosta Cup final last season, a year after winning the Ben Francis Cup, will hope to continue their upward trajectory this season and leads the zone, scoring 10 goals two more than Old Harbour.
Old Harbour High had the better of McGrath High the last time they met, winning 8-0 at home after they were held 0-0 in the first round, but it is highly unlikely today’s game will produce that many goals or will be as lopsided.
Maldon High have picked up where they left off in the first round last season and have won the first three games of the season for the first time ever but will play away to Cornwall College who they last beat in the second round of the 2022 season but have lost the last six against.
Maldon High started the season shakily with back to back 3-2 wins but are coming off a 5-0 win over Herbert Morrison Technical while Cornwall College has sandwiched a feckless 0-0 draw with St James High with a 6-0 win over Green Pond High and a 7-0 drubbing of Irwin High, both wins marking the first time in years where the scores have been as lopsided as they were.
Alphansus Davis High and Christiana High are also separated by goal-difference and will host Mile Gully High and Alston High respectively as they seek to continue to increase their distance from the rest of the teams in the group.
Ocho Rios High are on a roll in Zone K with 14 goals in three games and coming off an 8-0 win over Discovery Bay High on Saturday and will take on Marcus Garvey Technical who have already given up eight goals in their three games played.
Port Antonio High will start favourites against Iona High, who are on three points from their three games played.
Glenmuir High had won their first eight games last season and appears well set to at least match that total this season with 16 goals scored in two games and will face Winston Jones High who they whipped 15-0 last season.
Garvey Maceo will hope to keep pace but faces Denbigh High who have been slow off the mark with one point from two games played.
Mannings School have scored 19 goals in their two games played and face Black River High who they beat both times last season while Petersfield High will host Lewisville High who have picked up four points in three games in their return to the competition after being away for more than 20 years.
