WHAT THE PUNDITS SAY – September 16
Have we seen Mondo Duplantis’s last world record with the bar now being raised to 6.30m?
Leighton Levy, sports writer: No, we haven’t. Mondo breaks the world record one cm at a time, and when you look at how far over the bar he gets each time it becomes clear that several more world records are in his future. He has made about US$1.4 million off world records so far and it’s not about to stop now. Mondo is better than Sergey Bubka, who to me was the greatest of all time. How far up can he go will continue to be the only question because with him, victory is always guaranteed because the only rival he has… is height.
Daniel Blake, sports writer: Definitely not. I believe he has the potential to go as high as 6.35m, though I wouldn’t put it pass him to get to 6.40m. With that said, to move from 6.17m in 2020 to 6.30m now is truly unheard of — and if there was any doubt before, he should be regarded as highly as Usain Bolt, Karsten Warholm, et cetera.
Trishana McGowan, track and field analyst: This is such a good question because we keep thinking that this is it. Can he get better? And I believe that he’s not done yet. I believe he enjoys the challenge of what the pole vault presents, what his opponents present, the support that he has. It propels him to the level of success we are able to witness. I don’t think it will be difficult for him to achieve once he gets into training, gets into doing what is necessary to attain that 6.31m.
How quickly will it happen? Only Mondo Duplantis can tell us. He’s really good, and I think just like we see with our sprinters — our great Usain Bolt — these guys are made for some things and I think Mondo Duplantis was made for the pole vault. I believe he’s not done yet. I believe he can get over that 6.31m — maybe not immediately, but he’ll get there with time and training. However, I must say I will not be surprised if he’s to hit that 6.31m quickly because he’s that good.
It’s so good the excitement he adds to the field events on the world stage. He’s adored by almost everyone who follows track and field. They too [are] in support and cheering him on, including his opponents. I’m excited to see in an off year, non-major championship year [like] next year if he’ll compete or take some time off and ‘wheel and come again’ in 2027, but whenever he gets into action I do believe he’s capable of hitting that 6.31m.
Floyd Quarrie, QPC Sports founder and head coach: Absolutely not! I would never give Mondo Duplantis a ceiling; I think he sets it as it goes along. I’m sure he has a target every season — based on how training has been going — in terms of how far he can push his body. I think he’s rewriting what is deemed possible in the pole vault. He’s successfully done that by breaking the world record 14 times in that same event. Someone that has 14 records to their name, I don’t believe we should put a ceiling on him. He’s the only one that can probably limit himself in that regard. But personally, where he is, I don’t see an end to his potential right now.
