Tokyo 2025: Ricketts and Smith leap to triple jump final
Two-time silver medalist Shanieka Ricketts and Ackelia Smith are both through to the final of the women’s triple jump after the qualification round Tuesday at the Tokyo World Athletics Championships.
Despite just missing the automatic qualifying mark of 14.35m, Ricketts’ 14.30m (0.7m/s) with her second attempt was good enough for fifth best in the round after she had fouled her first attempt. The national champion also jumped 14.28m (0.7m/s) on her third attempt.
Smith had a best mark of 14.21m (0.2m/s) on her first attempt before following up with marks of 14.14m (1.0m/s) and 14.09m (0.3m/s).
Defending champion Yulimar Rojas of Venezuela made a sensational comeback after two years out with an injury to qualify for the final with just one jump, 14.49m (0.3m/s), second best behind world leader Leyanis Perez Hernandez of Cuba- 14.66m (0.4m/s).
