Minister Grange mourns death of Edwin Allen athlete
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia Grange, has expressed sadness at the death of 15-year-old Edwin Allen student-athlete Taniesha Gayle.
Gayle, a member of Edwin Allen’s gold medal medley relay team at last March’s ISSA Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships, died at Percy Junor Hospital in Clarendon after falling ill during a training session at the Frankfield-based school.
Acknowledging her passing, Minister Grange said, “She was such a promising young athlete…No doubt Taneisha would have been one of the young ladies who would have helped Edwin Allen High to maintain its prominence in high school track and field and maybe even go on to represent Jamaica.”
“Her loss is truly heartbreaking. She has definitely gone too soon,” she added. “Rest in peace, Taniesha.”
Grange extended condolences to Gayle’s family, friends, teammates, and the wider Edwin Allen community.
