Mt Pleasant trio completes transfer to Belgian amateur club
ST ANN, Jamaica — Former Jamaica Premier League (JPL) champions Mt Pleasant FA announced on Friday that three players, former captain Sue-Lae McCalla, Devontae Campbell and Romaine Blake have completely transferred to Belgian amateur club RAEC Mons.
A release from the St Ann based club described the move as “historic” saying “the trio become the first Jamaicans to sign with RAEC Mons”, a club in which MPFA Owner Peter Gould recently acquired majority stakes.
Gould was quoted as saying, “This is more than a transfer, it’s the beginning of a bridge between Jamaica and Europe. I am proud to see our captain, our first academy graduate and one of our rising stars become the first Jamaicans to wear the Mons jersey. It speaks to our commitment to creating opportunities for Jamaican talent on the world stage. We wish them every success and look forward to seeing their impact in Belgium.”
McCalla, who is one of the longest serving players at the club, joining Mount Pleasant nearly a decade ago, leaves as a club legend. The dependable defender turned midfielder played a pivotal role in the team’s 2023 JPL title triumph, famously scoring the decisive goal in the final against Cavalier. His leadership, professionalism and commitment will forever be etched in the history of Mount Pleasant Academy, the release said.
“Campbell, the first player from MPFA’s youth academy to earn a professional contract, embodies the club’s mission of providing a pathway from grassroots to professional football. His progression is a proud milestone that validates the academy’s vision of nurturing talent to the highest levels of the game.”
“Blake, who joined Mount Pleasant in the summer, immediately impressed with his technical quality and composure. Though his stay was brief, he made a strong impression and leaves with the club’s best wishes for his European journey,” it added.
