Vauxhall off to flawless opening under Kyle Butler
KYLE Butler has made a flying start to his coaching career, guiding Vauxhall High to three wins from their opening three matches in this season’s ISSA/WATA Manning Cup — a significant boost for a team that failed to progress from the first round last year.
Butler, who took charge of the programme this summer, is savouring the early momentum while keeping his eyes on the bigger picture in what is his first season coaching in the storied competition.
“It’s a good start, and of course I’m pleased with the results,” he admitted. “For me it’s about consistency, performing well week in and week out — not just in the first three games. The boys understand that the standard is higher than just winning — we’re building a culture here.”
That culture was on display in their most recent outing when Vauxhall came from behind to beat Edith Dalton James 4-2, a performance Butler believes underlines the character of his squad.
“That win said a lot about the mentality of our boys,” he said. “To go behind and respond the way we did shows resilience, belief, and trust in the work we’ve been putting in.”
The early numbers back up Butler’s optimism. Vauxhall have netted 14 goals in their first three fixtures while conceding four — an attacking statement that has placed them firmly in contention to progress from Zone C.
Yet, the true test lies ahead with upcoming clashes against St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) and Jamaica College, the group’s traditional powerhouses, and who occupy the top two spots.
“Those are two strong programmes, and we respect them,” Butler said. “The approach doesn’t change drastically. We want to impose our style regardless of the opponent but, of course, we’ll prepare for their strengths and look for ways to exploit weaknesses. Against teams like that, discipline and focus become even more important.”
Vauxhall’s next assignment comes on Wednesday against Greater Portmore High when they will look to extend their perfect start to four straight victories.
The decisive fixtures against STATHS on September 30 and Jamaica College on October 3 could ultimately determine whether Butler’s debut campaign translates early promise into a genuine breakthrough.
