Wolmer’s player collapses during Manning Cup match
Wolmer’s Boys’ football player, Cael Samuels, is reportedly in stable condition after collapsing on the field during his team’s ISSA/Wata Manning Cup first-round encounter against Calabar on Tuesday afternoon.
The incident occurred in the first half of the match, which kicked off at 1:00 pm.
Samuels was rushed to Medical Associates Hospital after suddenly falling to the ground in an off-the-ball incident.
“I didn’t see what took place. It was an off-the-ball incident where the ball was elsewhere and I heard shouts of, ‘Coach, coach, Cale collapse,’” Head Coach Jerome Waite recounted.
“I can’t give you in detail what happened or the state that he is in now. All I can tell you is that he has been admitted and is stable.”
Waite confirmed that Samuels suffers from asthma and admitted the situation had a significant impact on his young squad, which eventually went down 1-4.
“When something like that happens in the presence of you as a player, it will add a little nervousness on top of the situation,” he explained. “We didn’t play any football today, we just didn’t play.”
“You have to remember, eight of them are coming from Under-15 and that includes two 14-year-olds. It is a young team.”
Despite the setback, Waite expressed confidence that his players will recover.
“They will bounce back. Once I have a meeting and outline all the necessary details and try to get them back into the right frame of mind, things will be different.”
It was a second-consecutive defeat for the Wolmerians after losing 2-4 to Craig Butler’s Mona High over the weekend.
