Defending champs Garvey Maceo on verge of d’Cup zonal play-off
Defending champions Garvey Maceo High are among three teams that could secure places in the play-offs of their respective zones when the ISSA daCosta Cup football competition continues with 16 games on Wednesday.
Christiana High have secured their place in the Zone G play-offs after winning their first five games. They could be joined by Alphansus Davis High, while Garvey Maceo and Glenmuir High could ensure qualification in Zone I if they both get their fifth wins.
Three of the 13 zones in the competition-E, G and I comprise more than six teams and they will play each other once before the top four teams on points qualify for the zone play-offs.
In the play-offs teams will play each other once and the top three will then advance to the round of 32.
Alphansus Davis will hope to rebound immediately from their upset 0-2 loss to Holmwood Technical on Monday when they face Zone leaders Christiana High, who will be seeking their sixth-straight victory.
Another loss for Alphansus Davis would not rule them out of contention, but it would be a major setback with Knox College, third on eight points, taking on Alston High, who have lost all five games played so far.
Garvey Maceo and former winners Glenmuir High are the powerhouses in the zone and are expected to beat Kemps Hill High and Foga Road High, respectively, to go to 15 points each.
Ocho Rios High will hope to win their first six games when they meet second-placed Ferncourt High in a Zone K game at Drax Hall in St Ann.
A crucial round of games are on the schedule in Zone E in which teams will be seeking to get closer to a place in the play-offs. Zone leaders BB Coke High, on 10 points, are set to play away to Newell High; second place St Elizabeth Technical (eight) are to face Sydney Pagon High; and Maggotty High and Lacovia High, who are tied on seven points; are to meet at Appleton Sports Club.
Munro College are in fifth place on five points from five games and could miss the play-offs.
On Tuesday, Port Antonio High joined Manchester High as the second team to win six-straight games after beating St Mary Technical 2-0 at Carder Park.
