Professor Errol Morrison celebrates 80th birthday
DISTINGUISHED physician and academic Professor Errol Morrison celebrated his 80th birthday last Saturday evening with an intimate and elegant gathering at his St Andrew home.
The evening brought together family, colleagues, and friends from across Jamaica and the wider Caribbean to honour Morrison’s decades of service to medicine, higher education, and national development.
Guests were treated to an enchanting musical performance by the DiMario McDowell & Friends Ensemble, whose live repertoire provided the soundtrack to an evening of warm tributes and celebration.
Morrison is widely recognised for his pioneering contributions in the fields of endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolic disorders. His illustrious career has included serving as president of the University of Technology, Jamaica, pro vice-chancellor and dean of graduate studies at The University of the West Indies, and most recently as director general and advisor to the prime minister on science and technology.
His groundbreaking research, including the identification of the Morrison Syndrome of Phasic Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (later designated by the World Health Organization as Type 5 Diabetes Mellitus), has earned him international acclaim.
Professor Morrison is a recipient of the Order of Jamaica, the UNESCO/ International Diabetes Federation Award, the American Diabetes Association Harold Rifkin Award, and numerous other honours.
The 80th birthday celebration highlighted not only his professional achievements but also the enduring impact of his mentorship, philanthropy, and commitment to Jamaica’s development.
