Nelson aims for international glory at Century Downs
Dane “The Warrior Chief” Nelson is set to kick off his campaign for a second international title this season at Century Downs racetrack in Canada this weekend. Fresh from his recent victory as jockeys’ champion at Century Mile earlier this month, Nelson is riding high on confidence as he prepares to take on the competition.
Nelson shared his mindset for the upcoming racing season.
“It is the same thing: win as many races as possible and continue to build my brand. Riding on the international stage is always good as you continue to learn and that’s always good when you want to improve,” Nelson told the
Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide.
With eight rides lined up for the weekend, Nelson will be busy on both Friday and Saturday. On Friday, he’ll mount Cosmic’s Turn in the third race, trained by Karline Kingston, followed by Zone Control in the sixth race, trained by James Brown, and Gem Quality in the seventh race, trained by Jeri Robertson.
On Saturday, Nelson’s mounts include River Rock Fire in the first race, trained by Brown, Sir Bregovic in the second race, trained by Gonzalo Anderson, and I’ve Got All Nite in the third race, trained by Kingston. He’ll also ride Gingers Giant in the fifth race, trained by Anderson, and Bodemonster in the eighth race, trained by Brown.
“Yes, the aim is to win the jockeys’ championship title. It won’t be easy but with hard work, dedication, and confidence, the success will come,” Nelson said.
The racing season, which began on September 20, is set to conclude on November 1. Nelson’s experience and skill will undoubtedly be put to the test as he competes for the top spot. With four Jamaican jockey championships under his belt and previous titles at Century Mile and Century Downs in 2023, Nelson is well-equipped to tackle the challenge ahead.
