Holmwood, Knox complete daCosta Cup Zone G play-off slots
Cornwall face St James in bid to earn spot in Round of 32
HOLMWOOD Technical and Knox College completed the play-off pairings in Zone G of the ISSA daCosta Cup football competition after registering contrasting results in Friday’s games.
The duo joined Christiana High and Alphansus Davis High who had booked spots in the play-offs set to start on October 1.
Holmwood beat Alston High 3-0 to complete their first-round schedule while Knox College and Alphansus Davis High played out a 2-2 result.
Christiana beat Porus High 5-1 to top the zone with 18 points, two more than Alphansus Davis. Holmwood finished on 13 points and Knox College on 12.
Elsewhere on Friday, Ocho Rios High won their seventh-straight game to be on the verge of qualifying, hammering Discovery Bay High 13-0 in the Zone K match at Drax Hall in St Ann.
Ocho Rios High are on 21 points and their place in the next round could be confirmed after the completion of two other Zone K games today. Second-placed York Castle High are to host fourth-placed Brown’s Town while third-placed Ferncourt High are away to Marcus Garvey High at Drax Hall.
Petersfield High knocked Little London High out of contention for a second-round spot, beating them 3-0 in Zone C, while William Knibb Memorial significantly improved their chances of getting out of Zone D with a 4-0 victory over Spot Valley High.
Meanwhile, former champions Cornwall College can become the third team to secure a spot in the Round of 32 if they can beat St James High in their Zone A return game at Jarrett Park this afternoon. If successful, Cornwall will join Manning’s School and Cedric Titus High who qualified earlier in the week.
Cornwall, on 16 points and with a game in hand, lead Zone A on goal difference, ahead of Maldon High.
Cornwall were held 0-0 by St James High in the first game — the only blemish on their card so far.
St James High, who are still mathematically in the race for one of the two automatic qualifying spots, are on five points and must win if they are to stay in contention.
On Thursday, Maldon High missed out on qualifying for the next round at the first time of asking, after they had to rally for a 1-1 result against Irwin High.
Zone M leaders Port Antonio High, who have won all six games so far, can book their spot in the second round with a win over second-placed Titchfield High and if other results fall in their favour.
St Elizabeth Technical, who are coming off a 17-0 win over Sydney Pagon High on Wednesday, need only a point from their game against Maggotty High to qualify for the play-offs in Zone E. They would join BB Coke High who have already advanced.
The competition in Zone E is close as six of the seven teams remain in contention for one of the four play-off spots.
Munro College, quarter-finalists last season, must beat Newell High to stay in contention.
