No contest
Golding unchallenged as PNP settles top posts with one new face
MEMBER of Parliament (MP) for St Catherine North Central Natalie Neita Garvey is the only new face in the upper echelon of the Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) for its next political cycle.
In a media release on Friday the PNP said nominations for the posts of president and vice-presidents closed at midday with only five nominations, so there is no need for an internal election.
Mark Golding — who has served as PNP president since November 2020 — was, as expected, the sole nominee for the party’s top position, giving him another two-year term after leading the Comrades to a vastly improved showing in the last general election.
Neita Garvey was joined in the vice-presidents’ nomination by incumbents Mikael Phillips, the MP for Manchester North Western; Ian Hayles, MP for Westmoreland Western; and Mayor Norman Scott, chairman of the St Catherine Municipal Corporation.
In a release over the signature of the general secretary Dr Dayton Campbell the PNP said it wanted to place on record its appreciation for Senator Donna Scott-Mottley, who opted not to seek re-election as a vice-president.
“Comrade Scott-Mottley has served with distinction in the role over the last several years and played a pivotal part during the election campaign. The PNP acknowledges and thanks her for her outstanding service and commitment to the movement,” said Campbell in the release.
“Looking ahead, the party will convene its two-day National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on October 4–5, to be followed by the annual regional conferences and the election of regional officers. The calendar of activities will conclude with a one-day private session of the annual conference on November 30, 2025.
“The PNP remains focused on advancing its agenda of justice, inclusion, and progress for the Jamaican people,” added Campbell.
