Montego Bay United whip Spanish Town Police to retake JPL lead
ST JAMES, Jamaica – Montego Bay United returned to the top of the Jamaica Premier League standings after thrashing promoted Spanish Town Police 4-0 in their first round game played at the Montego Bay Sports Complex on Sunday.
It was the first time this season Montego Bay United did not concede a goal as they moved to 13 points, two more than Racing United who were held to a second consecutive 0-0 draw against Tivoli Gardens. Portmore United and Chapelton Maroons are tied on 10 points, having both played a game less than the two frontrunners.
Spanish Town Police had two players shown the red card at the Montego Bay Sports Complex – Anil Ferguson was sent off in the 88th minute by referee Daneon Parchment while Shevan James was dismissed while he was on the bench, having earlier been substituted out of the game.
Three of the four Montego Bay players who scored were getting on the score sheet for the first time this season.
Josiah Trimmingham opened the scoring when he headed home a corner in the eighth minute and Timar Lewis made it 2-0 when he headed the ball into the goal from just inside the six yards box in the 28th minute.
Deonjay Brown, who was a second half substitute, finished off a swift counter attack when he fired into an unprotected goal in the 74th minute for 3-0 and Jahmari Clarke scored his third goal of the season, in his first game back from injury, in the 85th minute.
