Maldon target daCosta Cup second-round spot
AS many as seven more schools, including former champions Rusea’s High, could book a spot in the Round of 32 in the ISSA daCosta Cup football competition today.
Former champions Cornwall College and Clarendon College, as well as Manning’s School, Cedric Titus High and Ocho Rios High, have already booked their spots.
William Knibb Memorial, Manchester High and Central High all need just a point, while Maldon High, Rusea’s, Petersfield High and Port Antonio High will advance with a win.
The play-offs in Zone I are to be completed today, with Denbigh High and Kemps Hill High needing only a draw in their respective games.
But the massive clash between defending champions Garvey Maceo High and former winners Glenmuir High — both with perfect records — could overshadow those games.
Maldon High, in second place in Zone A, will be making a second attempt to qualify for the second round after they had to rally for a draw against Irwin High on Thursday when a win would have seen them through.
Maldon, on 16 points, are scheduled to take on third-placed Herbert Morrison Technical whom they had defeated 5-0 already this season. Herbert Morrison, seven points behind Maldon, are still in contention with a slim mathematical chance.
Rusea’s High lead Zone B with 17 points — four ahead of second-placed Frome Technical whom they will seek to beat for a second time this season after a 3-1 win previously.
Frome, who were upset 1-2 by Green Island in their last game, cannot afford to lose, with Cambridge High breathing down their necks.
Petersfield High will have their hands full playing way to third-placed Black River High who must win if they are to keep their slim hopes alive.
William Knibb have had to play second fiddle to a rampaging Cedric Titus High so far but a draw away to Troy High would be enough to see them into the next round with a game to spare.
Manchester High, who are away to May Day High, are on their way to securing top honours in Zone F after winning their first seven games. Manchester defeated May Day 5-0 previously, and a point would be sufficient to see them advancing to the next round.
Central High topped the zone last year but a loss to Clarendon College saw them fall off the pace. They can make amends, however, if they can get the better of Lennon High a second time this season.
Central High are on 13 points and a draw would give them the edge over both Lennon High and Edwin Allen High.
Port Antonio High lost their perfect record after they were held 0-0 by second-placed Titchfield High on Saturday. Port Antonio will seek to rebound against Iona High who are on two points and out of contention.
