Second medical report ordered for man said unfit to plead
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Romaine Smalling appeared in the St James Parish Court last Wednesday with proceedings opening on the note that a doctor had declared him unfit to plead. He faces a charge of malicious destruction of property following a domestic dispute.
Court documents state that on July 9, at the complainant’s home in West Green, St James, the woman — who shares a child with Smalling — heard knocking at her window. Upon stepping outside she discovered the glass had been shattered. Several stones were also found scattered across her veranda.
Smalling was allegedly spotted standing at her gate, visibly upset and clutching a knife while hurling angry words in her direction.
Concerned for her safety, the woman contacted the police. Smalling was later arrested and taken to the Montego Bay Police Station where he was formally charged.
The damaged window was reportedly valued at $60,000.
During Wednesday’s hearing the prosecution informed the court that video footage related to the incident was still pending. Judge Natiesha Fairclough-Hylton said a follow-up medical report would be required before proceedings could continue. Such reports are standard when a defendant’s fitness to plead is in question, as they help the court determine whether the accused can understand the charges, participate in their defence, and make informed decisions during the trial.
Smalling was remanded in custody until October 15.
