Chief Justice pays tribute to late Judge Ruth Lawrence
KINGSTON, Jamaica —Chief Justice Bryan Sykes has expressed deep sorrow at the passing of Judge Ruth Lawrence, describing her as a judge whose career was marked by integrity, compassion, and dedication to justice.
In a statement on Wednesday, Sykes said Lawrence’s death was “a profound loss to our system and to all who knew her,” while extending condolences on behalf of the judiciary.
Lawrence began her career with the courts in Westmoreland in 1997 and rose to the position of Resident Magistrate in 2009. Over the years, she served across several parishes, including Westmoreland, Trelawny, Kingston and St Andrew, St James, and St Ann. She also chaired the Children’s Court in the Northern Circuit and played an influential role in the Western Regional Family Court.
Chief Justice Sykes highlighted not only her professional contributions but also her impact beyond the bench, noting that she enriched the lives of children, families, and communities through her leadership and compassion.
“To her family, colleagues, and friends, I extend my deepest sympathies during this difficult time,” he said. “Ruth’s legacy of dedication and service will continue to inspire us all. May her soul rest in eternal peace.”
