Safe Passage takes International Marlin Tournament crown
Safe Passage topped the recent 64th Montego Bay Yacht Club International Marlin Tournament that was held over three days (September 25-27) on the waters of Jamaica’s north coast.
It saw 16 boats, 100 anglers, and 15 junior competitors turn the waters into a battleground of skill, strategy, and endurance.
The tournament concluded with thrilling offshore action and a commanding victory by Safe Passage, owned by Chris Berry and Mark Berry and captained by Paco Vela.
With 15 marlin released and a total 29 reported hook-ups lost, the 2025 edition was a true test of skill and persistence. Safe Passage’s crew etched their names into history with a dominant performance that showcased precision, teamwork and resilience.
Looking ahead, the 65th anniversary staging set for September 23 to 27, 2026, promises to elevate the tournament’s legacy as the oldest active tournament in Jamaica and one of the premier big-game fishing events in the Caribbean.
Safe Passage had six marlin releases for 1,800 points with anglers Chris Berry, Brian Pengelley, Bob Rawe, Mark Berry, and Kevin Mann; My Other Toy, with owner and captain Radcliffe Gayle, was second overall with 613 points from two releases and 13 lb mahi mahi with anglers Ian Pitchforth, Matthew Manson, while
Sea Horse owner Raymond Rousseau, and captain Adam Epstein finished third with 600 points from two releases and one lost with anglers Raymond Rousseau and Jacob Rousseau.
There were also releases from Matthew Robinson on Saint Gerard, Gary Gourzong on Real Dreamer, Devon Searchwell on Fishy Bizniz, and Russell Wilson Spence on 2 Cantankerous.
There were also special awards.
The winning junior angler is Harry Ince, while the heaviest mahi mahi was 15.5 lbs for Jesse Ince. The heaviest wahoo was 23.1 lbs for Paulette Thai Chen (Still Keeping It Jiggy), and the heaviest tuna was 25.5 lbs for Jacques Carvallo (Fishy Bizniz).
