Garvey Maceo, Glenmuir advance after contrasting results
Rusea’s chase second-round berth
Defending champions Garvey Maceo High and former champions Glenmuir High qualified for the ISSA daCosta Cup Round of 32 despite contrasting results in the Zone I play-offs on Thursday.
High-flying Glenmuir were upset 0-1 by Kemps Hill High, while Garvey Maceo defeated Denbigh High 2-1. The results left Glenmuir and Garvey Maceo tied on 21 points each with both assured of finishing no lower than third in the group.
Their qualification brings to 12 the number of schools that have qualified for the second round. They join Cornwall College, Mannings School, Cedric Titus High, William Knibb Memorial High, Christiana High, Alphansus Davis High, Manchester High, Central High, Clarendon College, and Ocho Rios High in the second round.
At Kemps Hill High on Thursday, the home team snapped a three-game losing skid to Glenmuir High when Dalton Francis scored the winner in the 85th minute. When the teams met earlier this season Glenmuir won 3-0.
The win increased Kemps Hill’s chances of advancing as they moved to 16 points in third place, three more than Denbigh High.
Garvey Maceo rebounded from their loss to Glenmuir High on Tuesday to register their second 2-1 win over Denbigh High this season.
Ferncourt High avenged a first-round loss to York Castle High by winning 2-0 in their Zone K return game at Drax Hall.
York Castle remain in second place on 16 points, while Ferncourt High join Browns Town, both on 13 points. Ocho Rios High are the zone winners.
Morant Bay High (nine points) joined Paul Bogle High at the top of Zone L after beating Yallahs High 4-1.
Former champions Rusea’s High, who are on 18 points, can book their place with a win over Green Island High (11 points) in their Zone B return game.
Green Island had held the former champions to a 1-1 result in the first round.
Green Island, unbeaten in their last four games and are on 11 points, must win this encounter if they are to stay in contention for a second-round place.
Rusea’s High are coming off a 1-1 result against Frome Technical on Tuesday.
Titchfield High and St Mary High, second and third, respectively, behind Port Antonio High in Zone M, would boost their chances if they can score wins.
Titchfield High, on 17 points, are to face out-of-contention St Mary Technical at Carder Park, while St Mary High (16) are slated to meet Iona High at Highgate Community Centre.
