Timmy Love asks Why
Although playing in a band for many years introduced him to different genres of music, Timmy Love never heard of Why — Randy Crawford’s 1983 song — until a friend suggested recently that he cover it.
The singer/bassist was so taken by its contemplative tone that he agreed to record a reggae version.
Produced by Dwayne Morris, his take on Why was released on October 3.
“Approximately two months ago I was in a meeting with Michael Davis of my spiritual group that meets once a week. He found out that I was the lead singer for my band, Timmy Love and RefleXX, and recommended that I cover the song Why,” Timmy Love recalled. “After listening to the song a few times I fell in love with it, because it took me to a place in my soul where only God and I dwell.”
Keyboardist Sidney Mills, a veteran session musician of the New York reggae scene, and guitarist Alexander Moseley of Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam fame, accompanied him on Why.
The original is from Nightline, Crawford’s 1983 album that helped define the smooth jazz craze of that era.
The release of Why continues a busy year for St Mary-born Timmy Love, a fixture on the Connecticut reggae scene for many years.
Love & Unity, his second album which was released in July, containing covers of pop standards like Africa by Toto and Kiss From A Rose, originally done by Seal.
Time of Your Life, his first solo album, came out in 2017.
With the RefleXX Band, Timmy Love has recorded five albums.
