Five more schools advance to daCosta Cup second round

Five schools including four that did not advance past the first round last season, booked their spots in the round of 32 in the ISSA daCosta Cup football competition after Tuesday’s set of games.

Maggotty High, Knox College, Ferncourt High and Morant Bay High returned to the second round and were joined by Titchfield High as 26 of the 32 places have now been taken.

Also yesterday, former champions and Ben Francis Cup holders St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS), Christiana High and Paul Bogle High were confirmed as zone winners.

The five schools joined the others who had qualified earlier-Cornwall College, Rusea’s High, Manning’s School, Petersfield, Cedric Titus, William Knibb Memorial, BB Coke High, St Elizabeth Technical, Manchester High, Christiana High, Alphansus Davis High, Central High, Clarendon College, Glenmuir High, Garvey Maceo High, Kemps Hill High, McGrath High, Dinthill Technical, Ocho Rios High, Paul Bogle High and Port Antonio High.

Maggotty booked their spot with a 0-0 draw with Lacovia High and edged them on goal-difference after they both ended on 11 points each.

STETHS swapped places with BB Coke by beating them 3-0 in the top of the table clash, to end with 19 points, one more than the losers.

Knox surprised Holmwood 4-0 in their Zone G play-off game, to finish third with 15 points, two more than Holmwood as Christiana avenged their earlier loss to Alphansus Davis, winning 1-0 to take zone honours.

Ferncourt returned to the second round for the first time in more than five seasons as they edged Brown’s Town 1-0 to ease past York Castle, who were beaten 4-1 by zone winners Ocho Rios.

Ferncourt and York Castle, both ended on 19 points but Ferncourt had the better goal-difference of 13 to two.

Morant Bay took the second spot in Zone L by drawing 2-2 with zone winners Paul Bogle, and finished on 10 points, one more than Yallahs, who beat Fair Prospect 5-0.

Titchfield’s 2-0 win over Horace Clarke gave them the edge for second place in Zone M ahead of St Mary High, who upset zone winners Port Antonio 2-0.

Three more schools can secure their places on today’s penultimate day of the first round of matches with the runners up in Zones A, B and F to be decided.

Additionally, the winners of Zones D, H and I are determined despite all the automatic qualifiers have already been determined.

Despite failing in three previous games to secure the runners up spot in Zone A, Maldon High only needs to show up for their game against Green Pond High as the odds of Herbert Morrison Technical passing them is a long shot.

Maldon are on 16 points, failing to win any of their last three where they were outscored 1-6 and earned a single point but are on 16 points, three more than Herbert Morrison, who were held 0-0 by St James High on Monday and would need to beat zone winners Cornwall by double digit goals to edge Maldon on goal-difference.

Frome needs a point from their game away to Knockalva Technical to join zone winners Rusea’s, who faces Cambridge at Jarrett Park.

Cambridge could join Frome on 17 points but would need to win by a massive margin while hoping Knockalva also win by a lopsided score.

A point would be sufficient for Belair (19 points), against May Day (17), who must win if they are to advance as the runners-up from Zone F.

The teams played out a 1-1 draw in their first meeting and both are coming off big wins on Saturday, as Belair beat Mount St Joseph Catholic and May Day beat Cross Keys 7-0.

In Zone D, Cedric Titus will win the zone if they can get at least a point in their game from William Knibb Memorial, who they had beaten 2-0 in their first game and maintain their perfect win record.

Cedric Titus lead with 21 points, three more than William Knibb Memorial, and both teams have already secure a spot in the Round of 32.

Clarendon College can win Zone H with a draw against Claude McKay, as the former champions and Central are tied in 19 points each and have both made safe progress to the next round.

Despite all three teams already through to the next round, the places in Zone I will be determined when the final games in the play-offs are decided today.

Leaders Glenmuir, on 22 points, will meet defending champions Garvey Maceo (21), both teams losing to third-placed Kemps Hill (19 points) who will play out of contention Denbigh.

Glenmuir beat Garvey Maceo 4-0 last week before losing to Kemps Hill, then drawing 0-0 with Denbigh on Saturday.

A draw would be sufficient for Glenmuir to take zone honours and Kemps Hill will need a double digit win if they are to improve on their third place, depending on the outcome of the other game.
