Taxi operator charged in connection with vendor’s murder
KINGSTON, Jamaica — A 44-year-old taxi operator has been charged in connection with the shooting death of 46-year-old vendor Walata Brown, who was killed at her home on Oxford Street, Kingston, on Sunday, September 28.
Damion Taylor, otherwise called “Fiyah”, of Rodney Street, Kingston 12, has been charged with murder, conspiracy to murder, possession of prohibited weapon, unauthorised possession of ammunition, and using a firearm to commit a felony.
According to reports from the Denham Town police, around 4:25 pm, on the day of the incident, Brown was sitting at home when Taylor drove a white Toyota Probox to her gate. An armed man exited the vehicle, approached her, and opened fire before escaping in the waiting car.
Brown sustained gunshot wounds to the head and was taken to hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
During the investigation, a review of footage from JamaicaEye, the island’s Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) network, led detectives to St Thomas on Tuesday, October 7. The vehicle allegedly used in the attack was seized, and Taylor was taken into custody.
He was formally charged later that day following a caution statement and a question-and-answer session conducted in the presence of his attorney.
A court date is being finalised.
