Champions Garvey Maceo send message with win over Glenmuir
CLARENDON, Jamaica — Defending champions Garvey Maceo Technical sent a message that they intend on winning back to back titles for the first time after they rallied from two goals down to beat Glenmuir High 3-2 in the play-off game and topped the points tables in Zone I of the ISSA daCosta Cup football competition on Wednesday.
Garvey Maceo avenged their 4-0 loss to Glenmuir High in the first round and finished with 24 points, two more than Glenmuir High while Kemps Hill High took third place with 19 despite being beaten 1-0 by Denbigh High in the other Zone I play-off game played Wednesday.
Orane Watson had staked Glenmuir High to a 2-0 lead when he scored in the 28th and 46th minutes but Garvey Maceo rallied with two goals from Jihari Williams in the 52nd and 74th minutes with Rushane White scoring the winner in the 81st minute.
The loss extended Glenmuir High’s winless run to three straight games after they had lost to Kemps Hill High and drew against Denbigh High.
Meanwhile, Mannings School completed a perfect first round after winning all their games and not conceding a goal after beating Petersfield High 4-0 in their Zone C return round game.
Jordan Turner scored a double with Kajaye Williams and Devardo Reid each scoring once as Mannings School scored 47 goals, only behind Manchester High’s first round record 76 and Ocho Rios High’s 55, while playing two games less.
Manchester High ended their first round with a 7-1 win over Mt St Joseph Catholic High.
Cornwall College won Zone A in back to back seasons and ended with a 2-0 win over Herbert Morrison Technical in their Zone A game played in Montego Bay.
Carlondo Morris in the first half and Nickane Brown in the second half scored for Cornwall College who scored 35 goals, the most they have managed in more than five years and conceded just three goals.
Clarendon College topped Zone H after beating Claude McKay High 4-0 and improved to 22 points, three more than Central High who had completed their schedule last weekend on 19 points.
Belair High finished second in Zone F to Manchester High after edging May Day High 1-0 in their game that was cut short by rain, being called off after 82 minutes.
Belair High led 1-0 at the time of stoppage to finish on 22 points.
Also the game between Zone D leaders Cedric Titus and second placed William Knibb Memorial that was to decide the winners of the zone was rained out.
