Frome Tech and Maldon High qualify for daCosta Cup second round

WESTMORELAND, Jamaica — Former champions Frome Technical and Maldon High confirmed their places in the round of 32 in the ISSA daCosta Cup football competition after scoring wins over Knockalva Technical and Green Pond High, respectively on Wednesday.

Frome Technical came from behind to beat Knockalva Technical 2-1 in a game that was reduced to 70 minutes after it started an hour late due to heavy rains and joined Rusea’s High as the qualifiers from Zone B.

Maldon High snapped a three games winless run to hammer Green Pond High 5-0 and advanced from Zone A for the second straight year, joining Cornwall College.

They joined 26 other teams that had booked their spots earlier for the second round that starts on Saturday.

The qualifiers so far are: Cornwall College, Maldon High, Rusea’s High, Frome Technical, Mannings School, Petersfield High, Cedric Titus High, William Knibb Memorial, St Elizabeth Technical, BB Coke High, Maggotty High, Manchester High, Belair High, Christiana High, Alphansus Davis High, Knox College, Clarendon College, Central High, Garvey Maceo High, Glenmuir High, Kemps Hill High, McGrath High, Dinthill High, Ocho Rios High, Ferncourt High, Paul Bogle High, Morant Bay High, Port Antonio High and Titchfield High.

On Wednesday, Geovanni Porter sent Knockalva Tech into the lead when he scored in the 26th minute but Wayne Mullings responded with a second half double, scoring in the 41st and 49th minutes as Frome Technical improved to 20 points. This is four points shy of zone winners Rusea’s High who eliminated Cambridge High, beating them 2-1 at Jarrett Park.

Like they did last season, Maldon High qualified on the final day after a big win over Green Pond took them to 19 points, nine behind Zone A winners Cornwall College.

Maldon High endured a three-game run where they failed each time to advance into the second round, being held 1-1 by Irwin High, losing 1-0 to Herbert Morrison Technical, and then 4-1 to Cornwall College.
