J’can Bakes Betty Crocker’s B’DAY Cake

J’can Bakes Betty Crocker’s B’DAY Cake

Jamaican-born, Minnesota, USA-based pastry chef Dr Altreisha Foster-Bentho has done it again! Foster-Bentho, in 2021 to commemorate the 200th episode of The Bachelor spin-off, created a rose-adorned, six-tiered cake with each tier boasting a different flavour. The cake featured 200 red roses, and a single-stem red rose at the centre, representing the franchise’s iconic Final Rose.
American weekly magazines People and US Weekly both featured Foster-Benthor’s cake.

This time around, Sugarspoon Desserts, Foster-Bentho’s company, was tapped by General Mills to create a celebratory cake for Betty Crocker’s 104th birthday at the Minnesota Cake Picnic. Per the company’s press release: For this year’s Minnesota Cake Picnic, to celebrate Betty Crocker’s 104th Birthday we partnered with Dr Altreisha Foster-Bentho, founder of @sugarspoondesserts and @caketherapyfoundation, to design a one-of-a-kind eight-tier cake we describe as a true culinary art installation. Each tier features a mystery flavour combination, from pistachio to tropical passion fruit celebrating her Jamaican heritage, to indulgent cherry chocolate, inviting guests to taste Betty Crocker’s legacy in a whole new way.

Foster-Bentho, who proudly uses Betty Crocker mixes in her own kitchen and in her Cake Therapy Foundation programmes, shared:“In Cake Therapy, the kitchen is a metaphor for life, showing young girls that with the right ingredients and support, you can transform simple beginnings into something extraordinary.

“This cake is more than dessert, it’s a celebration of history, innovation, and community, honouring Betty Crocker’s role in inspiring generations of bakers while spotlighting the next generation of young creators.

Foster-Bentho shared exclusively with Thursday Food the behind-the-scenes execution of what she described as a culinary art installation, a seven-foot, eight-tiered masterpiece rising from the ground up.

“This design symbolises Betty’s enduring legacy: layered, timeless, and endless. To bring that history to life, the cake also features archival photographs drawn from Betty Crocker’s historical collection. These images highlight the evolution of the Betty Crocker logo, the introduction of the first spoon, and milestone moments that shaped her identity over the decades. The placement of the photos around the tiers creates a 360-degree experience, inviting guests to walk around the cake and immerse themselves in the story of Betty Crocker while celebrating her lasting impact on kitchens across generations.

Flavours and Story Behind the Tiers:

“For Betty Crocker’s 104th birthday cake, I wanted each tier to reflect creativity, nostalgia, and innovation, the very qualities that have always defined the Betty Crocker kitchen. I designed five mystery combinations that invite guests to taste the unexpected. These flavours represent how I envision buttercream layered cakes, unexpected, and bold. They place me in the same innovative space that Betty Crocker has always embodied: honouring tradition while daring to create something new.

1 Pistachio – elegant, and a nod to timeless flavours.

2 Blueberry Lemon – bright, fresh, and reminiscent of classic family desserts.

3 Double Strawberry with strawberry and buttercream filling, playful and celebratory, and reminiscent of summertime picnics.

4 French Vanilla with Caramel Buttercream + Vanilla Pineapple with Passion Fruit Buttercream – two halves of a tier that merge tradition with tropical flair, symbolising Betty Crocker’s global influence.

5 Cherry Chocolate with Chocolate Buttercream + Chocolate with Chunks and Caramel – indulgent and rich, a reminder of the comfort and joy that chocolate always brings.

Dr Altreisha Foster-Bentho’s celebration cake For Betty Crocker’s 104th birthday at the Minnesota Cake Picnic tour stop was a true culinary art installation with eight tiers of pistachio, blueberry lemon, double strawberry, French vanilla, and cherry chocolate flavours.
