St Mary poor relief runs for the homeless
PORT MARIA, St Mary — Building on the success of events staged over the last two years, the St Mary Municipal Corporation’s third annual Walk/Run for the Homeless will take place on Sunday, October 12, with organisers intent on raising funds that will be used to improve the quality of life for those who live on the streets.
It is an initiative of the corporation’s Poor Relief Department.
CEO Ethlyn Douglas told the Jamaica Observer that since 2023 the business community, social clubs, and members of the corporation’s staff have thrown their support behind the event.
“Persons come out to give their support knowing that they are doing it for a worthy cause. Funds that are raised from the event go towards the drop-in centre, rehabilitation of those who can be rehabilitated, and getting gifts for them during the Christmastime,” she explained.
The drop-in centre provides a safe space for the homeless to access basic necessities and work towards rehabilitation to regain their footing and rebuild their lives.
This year’s sponsors of the run/walk include Tourism Enhancement Fund, Portland Fresh Spring Water, and ISS Impact.
The event, which has a starting point of Port Maria’s Claude Stewart Park, runs from 6:00 am to 10:00 am.
