Mamma Mia steals the show in I’msatisfied Trophy feature race
IN a display of grit and determination, Mamma Mia pulled off a mild upset, toppling her more-fancied rivals in the $1.4-million I’msatisfied Trophy at Caymanas Park on Saturday.
Trained by Jason DaCosta, the gutsy performer Mamma Mia brought the field into the lane on a merry clip but found herself headed by Money Market (Dane Dawkins) as they plunged into the deep stretch. Yet Mamma Mia refused to be denied — she rallied close home with a burst of power, storming to victory in the Open Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upward by three and a half lengths.
Sent off as a 6-1 betting option, she was partnered by Jerome Innis – a jockey not often in the spotlight – and traversed six furlongs in 1:12.2 (23.2 – 47.1 – 59.2).
Unspun, partnered by Reyan Lewis, claimed second place after she had entered the fray as the 7-5 favourite. In third,
Champion Bubbler (Romario Spencer) crossed the line as a 20-1 outsider. Money Market, the 9-5 second favourite, initially finished second but was met with post-race justice. She was disqualified and placed out of the race for causing interference that unseated Demar Williams aboard Perfect Brew.
It was the second winner on the day for DaCosta who also saddled Star Quest (Eric Haughton) in the fourth race, the $1.1-million Reggae 6 Anniversary Trophy over six furlongs.
The action continues with races on Saturday, Sunday, and the following Monday.
