A Rainforest in the City (Part 1)
Thirty years of dedication have culminated in the creation of a stunning tropical oasis by landscape designer Marie Hylton. Her Upper St Andrew home is a vibrant haven of flora, fauna, and fruit trees.
SO Gardening (SOG) accepted Hylton’s gracious invitation to explore its beauty.
The driveway sets the stage — a regal entrance featuring palm trees, Italian cypresses, and bougainvillea. But the true oasis is the backyard. Here, laden fruit trees frame an impressive collection of orchids, bromeliads, and hibiscuses, with delicate red gingers and lilies appearing like hidden gems. It’s a no-brainer as to why she references her garden as a mini rainforest.
“My passion for gardening began over 30 years ago, the result of a dear friend of mine whose garden was so stunning, it fuelled my interest in learning everything I could about plants and landscape design,” Hylton shared with SOG
That interest didn’t stop at design; it fuelled her drive to create a diverse and practical space. Her garden now features various species alongside mango, avocado, apple, and coconut trees. Although she appreciates all blooms, Hylton is particularly drawn to bromeliads for their vibrant colour and unique structure.
“I have so many favourite flowers it’s difficult to choose. However, among my favourites are bromeliads. They transition throughout the season which makes them versatile,” she explained. “They add colour and texture when other flowering plants have stopped blooming and they have amazing durability.”
