Trelawny focuses on the homeless
FALMOUTH, Trelawny — With money raised from last year’s event still untouched, the Trelawny Municipal Corporation (TMC) will stage its second 5K run/walk next month to raise funds that will be used to assist the parish’s homeless community.
The Jamaica Observer was told that proceeds from last year’s inaugural event were earmarked for a chicken-rearing project at the parish’s homeless centre. However, the initiative was halted after the health department raised concerns about potential risks.
Proceeds from this year’s event are expected to be combined with the amount raised last year to support a new project for the shelter. That project is yet to be determined.
This year’s run/walk will be staged on November 23. It is being organised by the TMC’s Poor Relief Department and Disaster Management unit.
“We invite everyone to be out,” urged Mayor of Falmouth Councillor C Junior Gager during last Thursday’s regular monthly meeting of the TMC.
He said there is already a lot of support for the event from within the private sector.
“One company told me that all of the staff will be coming down just to participate, so it’s gonna be very good. I’m inviting even those who might be here, wherever you are, come down on November 23 and let us have this 5K run/walk as part of raising funds to assist the homeless,” he urged.
Adult participants will pay $2,000 while there is a $1,000 fee for children.
