Reggae Boyz regain World Cup qualifying group lead
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Jamaica regained the lead in Group B of the Concacaf final round World Cup qualification in style after hammering Bermuda 4-0 in their return round game played at the National Stadium in Kingston on Tuesday.
After slipping up against Curacao in the previous round, Jamaica rebounded to hammer the hapless Bermuda and move to nine points, one more than Curacao with Trinidad and Tobago in third place on five points, while Bermuda who are yet to earn a point were eliminated from contention.
Earlier in the day, Trinidad and Tobago had rallied in the second half to earn a 1-1 draw against Curacao at the Ergilio Hato Stadium in Willemstad.
Jamaica led 3-0 at half time before Dujuan Richards who replaced Kaheim Dixon in the 62nd minute, scored in the 76th minute to put some gloss on what was a complete performance.
In the first half, Jamaica scored three goals in an 11- minute period to take the game away from Bermuda, an own goal in the 24th minute from Dante Leverock and goals from Bobby Fray in the 26th minute and Shamar Nicholson.
Leverock headed a corner past his own goalkeeper, while Renaldo Cephas created the second and third goals, using his speed to get the Bermuda defence and produced crosses for Reid and Nicholson to score from close range.
Richards, who was called into the squad as replacement for an injured Demarai Gray, dribbled through most of the Bermudan half of the field and even while being challenged by three defenders, managed to beat the goalkeeper for the fourth goal.
