Reggae Girl Taylor Hinds turns back on Jamaica
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Reggae Girl Taylor Hinds has turned her back on Jamaica and accepted a call-up to represent England for two international friendlies against Brazil and Australia later this month.
The 26-year-old English-born Hinds made her Jamaican debut one year ago against France in an international friendly, having represented England at the Under-17 and Under-19 levels.
However, having not represented Jamaica in a competitive match, Hinds was not tied to the country of her ancestors and was eligible to represent the country of her birth.
The defender, who plays at left back or central defence, also made the switch from Liverpool to Arsenal this summer, later posted on social media.
“It’s a privilege to have two nationalities, and I’m incredibly proud to represent both. I have nothing but the utmost respect and appreciation for Jamaica — they’ve been so understanding and genuinely want the best for me, which means a lot.
“Being called up to represent England is an amazing feeling and opportunity. I know what it means to wear the shirt, to be a Lioness, and it truly means everything to me and my family,” she wrote.
When contacted by Observer Online for a comment, Jamaica’s head coach, Hubert Busby, said he will comment on the matter at the Reggae Girlz press conference later this week.
But some comments under her Instagram post were not too favourable.
“When England didn’t want you, we took you in. England comes knocking, you scamper back. Good luck, you won’t be missed,” one user wrote.
“She played for Jamaica prior, it’s wrong to switch your nationality when you can’t make your preferred nation and then switch back to your preferred nation as soon as they start to take an interest in you,” another said.
