Master Mac Food adds 15th store in latest round of expansion
Grocery chain Master Mac Food Store is set to open its 15th location and 5th supermarket this Thursday, October 16 — marking a new milestone in the company’s ongoing expansion across the wholesale and retail sector.
Located at 108-110 Constant Spring Road, adjacent to well-known enterprises such as Furniture Land, Carmen’s Corner and Taboo nightclub, the new superstore sits on approximately 40,000 square feet of total ground space, and is being touted as the largest and most advanced outlet in the more than 30-year-old chain’s growing network. It will be operated alongside four other supermarkets, eight wholesale outlets and two retail locations.
“For this store we’ll be adding some new things that the others don’t have such as a bakery and deli. Owing to the larger space we now have at this new location, we will also be stocking a wider variety of grocery items — giving customers an even more enhanced shopping experience,” owner and co-operator Raymond McMaster told the Jamaica Observer during an interview this week.
While declining to disclose the exact investment cost, McMaster described the development as a “costly venture” — one he believes is well-positioned to yield strong returns given its strategic location.
The new superstore forms part of a larger commercial complex being developed by the company on a 2.5-acre property it has owned for several years. Noting the increasing residential and commercial activity in the area, McMaster said the timing was right to activate the land’s potential.
“We had acquired the land with the intention of building a supermarket and also to develop the areas around it with strong commercial outlets. After having it sitting idly over the last few years, we began to take notice of the type of developments that were taking place within the Constant Spring Park area and as such have thought it best to move forward with the buildout of our next store in the form of a large supermarket,” he further told the Business Observer.
The supermarket as the anchor tenant sits among some 20 other commercial units housed at the location, many of which have already been leased or are now being prepared for opening. Some of these businesses include retail shops (clothing, books); professional services as well as eateries such as the popular Mystic Thai which is expected to open its doors on November 1, 2025.
Founded in the late 1980s, Master Mac Foods remains a family-run enterprise, led by McMaster and his wife Wendy along with their children, who are now being groomed for future takeover.
At full operation, the new Constant Spring superstore is expected to create 75 new jobs, bringing the company’s total employment across Jamaica to approximately 600 persons. Master Mac currently operates stores in Kingston, Portmore, Old Harbour, Mandeville, May Pen, Montego Bay, Brown’s Town, Ocho Rios and Stony Hill.
McMaster said that while there are no immediate plans for further expansion, the company remains open to new opportunities, including those in St Thomas, which in recent years continues to be eyed as a new frontier for development.
“If the right location comes up and it makes sense, we’ll explore it,” he said. “But right now, we’re focused on strengthening and managing the 15 stores we currently operate.”
With its newest store getting ready to offer competitive pricing, broad product selection and a more comfortable shopping environment that rivals top-tier supermarkets, McMaster said the expectation is also for the location to cater to a wider demographic consisting of high-income to budget-conscious shoppers.
“With this new store we’re hoping to get some good feedback from consumers and we want people to walk in and feel like they’re getting value for their money,” he closed in saying, while noting that the focus will not only be about products but also the shopping experience.
