NEPA urges caution at beaches this Heroes’ weekend
KINGSTON, Jamaica —With an expected increase in beach visits over the upcoming National Heroes’ weekend, the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) is urging Jamaicans to stay alert to sea and weather conditions and to follow beach safety guidelines to ensure a fun and incident-free holiday.
“The agency is concerned about recent incidents of drowning at the nation’s beaches. We are therefore urging the public to exercise caution, especially during the holiday period,” said Anthony McKenzie, director of Environmental Conservation and Management at NEPA.
“Persons are also encouraged to use the Natural Resources Conservation Authority’s (NRCA) licensed beaches. The public can visit NEPA’s beaches web page for more information,” he added.
To help the public stay safe while enjoying the island’s beaches, NEPA shared the following beach safety reminders:
• Check the weather: Stay alert to changing sea and weather conditions.
• Swim Safely: Only swim in areas with trained lifeguards.
• Stay hydrated and protected: Drink water and use reef-safe sunscreen.
• Observe signs: Be cautious and heed all beach warnings and safety signs.
• Watch children: Keep kids within sight and reach at all times.
• Don’t swim alone: Always swim with someone nearby in case of emergencies.
The agency is also encouraging the public to exercise good environmental habits while visiting beaches by properly disposing of garbage to protect marine species and preserve the beauty of the island’s coastline.
