UDC urges Jamaicans to prioritise safety during Heroes’ Day weekend
KINGSTON, Jamaica — As Jamaicans gear up to celebrate the upcoming Heroes’ Day holiday, the Urban Development Corporation (UDC) is urging the public to put safety first while travelling, gathering and enjoying the island’s natural attractions.
With an expected increase in motorists on roads and at leisure destinations, the UDC is reminding everyone to exercise extra caution during the long weekend.
“We want this weekend to be one of joy and relaxation, not misfortune,” said Dena Chatrie, director of business development at the UDC.
“That means making good decisions, looking out for one another and following all safety guidance so that everyone can return home safely.”
Popular UDC-managed sites such as Harmony Beach Park, Dunn’s River Falls and Park and Reach Falls are expected to see higher visitor numbers.
Reach Falls will host a special “Reach and Relax” event on Friday, October 17, featuring free entry, entertainment and local cuisine, aimed at encouraging Jamaicans to explore and appreciate the nation’s natural heritage.
While these sites offer memorable experiences, the UDC stressed the importance of vigilance. Visitors are advised to follow lifeguard instructions, remain within designated swimming areas, supervise children closely, and avoid risky behaviour such as excessive alcohol consumption near water.
The public is also reminded to stay hydrated, apply sunscreen and take regular breaks to prevent heat-related illnesses.
Road safety remains a key concern, with authorities warning motorists to obey traffic laws, avoid speeding and never drive under the influence. Pedestrians and cyclists are also urged to stay alert and visible, especially during early morning and evening hours.
