Niambe signposts Tosh Reloaded

An educator by profession, Niambe Tosh calls on her classroom training to teach young fans about her father, Peter Tosh, the reggae firebrand who was killed at his St Andrew home in September 1987 at age 42.

Tosh Reloaded is the working title of an album pairing the singer-songwriter digitally with high-profile artistes.

The project would be similar to Chant Down Babylon, the 1999 album by Stephen Marley that heard Bob Marley in digital duets with neo-soul acts like Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill.

“We’re actually working on a remix album, Tosh Reloaded, and we have lots of people that are excited about participating. From Anthony B, who is a diehard Tosh fan, and we’ve spoken with Damian Marley and he’s excited about working with us, so it’s in the works,” Niambe told the Jamaica Observer.

She heads a team that organises Tosh Fest, which will be held for the second time on October 19, whixh would have been her father’s 81st birthday.

Peter Tosh, an original member of The Wailers, which also included Marley and Bunny Wailer, is known for anti-establishment anthems like Legalize It and Equal Rights.

Tosh Fest takes place at Peter Tosh Memorial Garden in Belmont, Westmoreland, his hometown.

Tosh’s daughter, 44, spoke about other plans in the pipeline.

“I was so excited to see what the Marleys did with the One Love movie, it only just sparked the flames. So now it’s like we’ve seen what’s possible, we want to know more about Tosh. Where is Tosh in this journey?” Niambe disclosed. “We’ve got a few different directors come on board, but he’s [Peter] a phenomenon, so when I see different scripts it has to convey all that he is, and obviously that can take some time.”

Bob Marley: One Love is the title of the Paramount Pictures biopic that was released in 2024. Starring British actor Reinaldo Marcus Green as the reggae legend, it cost US$70 million to make and made over US$180 million at the global box office.

Niambe Tosh was born in Kingston but moved to her mother’s hometown of Boston, Massachusetts, USA, when she was four years old. Her older brother, Jawara McIntosh, who went by the stage name Tosh1, died in 2020.

Andrew Tosh, another of her siblings, Beenie Man and Mutabaruka are co-headliners for Tosh Fest 2025.
