Streetlights in Rocky Point damaged by widespread electricity theft — JPS
CLARENDON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Public Service company (JPS) says electricity theft from streetlights, is causing major damage to lamps in the Rocky Point community in Clarendon, leaving residents in darkness and anxious over public safety and security.
The company says illegal connections are responsible for over 70 per cent of the electricity consumed in the community, frustrating both residents and JPS crews required to effect repairs to the lamps on multiple occasions.
As recently as August 30, JPS teams were in the area repairing streetlamps that the electricity company says should have been able to serve the community for significantly longer periods.
“In addition to the war on theft, the Company’s teams have also been working closely with the Clarendon Parish Council, to maintain lights generally in the parish. During the month of September, teams repaired 70 streetlights in fourteen divisions,” JPS indicated.
