Is That A Fact claims Errol Subratie Memorial Cup
IS That A Fact, under a well-executed ride from apprentice jockey Shaheem Gordon, easily obliged as the favourite in the $1.25-million Errol “Big Sub” Subratie Memorial Cup feature race at Caymanas Park on Saturday.
The down-in-class Is That A Fact, who was sent off at odds of 6-5 in the Overnight Allowance contest, defeated
Run Julie Run (Dane Dawkins) by a length and three quarters. Is that A Fact completed the one-mile (1,600m) event in 1:39.1 (24.0 x 46.4 x 1:12.0 x 1:25.2).
Gordon held Is That A Fact off in the early stages of the race then maintained a steady pace down the backstretch. As they entered the half-mile (800m) turn Is That A Fact slipped to third, behind Unruly Mo (Raddesh Roman) and
Run Julie Run.
However Gordon timed the surge perfectly, propelling Is That A Fact to the front in the deep stretch where he fended off
Run Julie Run’s challenge to claim the win. Linguist trailed behind in third.
It was the second winner on the day for DaCosta who had earlier saddled Storm (Robert Halledeen) in the second race.
Both Storm and Is That A Fact are owned by Carlton Watson.
Jockey Raddesh Roman was not to be left out of the celebration as he booted home four winners on the nine-race card. Roman’s winners were Hi Slew Squared (first race), Sir Don (third race), Goodbye Firefly (fifth race), and Shooting Star (eighth race).
The three-day racing carnival continues on Sunday with another nine races starting at 12 noon.
