Garvey Maceo book daCosta Round of 16 spot

DEFENDING champions Garvey Maceo High led another seven schools into the Round of 16 in the daCosta Cup football competition after wins in the Round of 32 on Saturday.

Garvey Maceo, who were held to a draw on Wednesday, beat Paul Bogle High 4-0 to top Group 7 and will be joined by Old Harbour High, Ocho Rios High, Maggotty High, Clarendon College, Dinthill Technical and William Knibb Memorial.

Fourteen of the 16 spots have been taken but former champion Cornwall College are on the verge of qualification after mauling Cedric Titus High 13-1 in Montego Bay, with Carlondo Morris scoring eight times to move to six points in Group 1.

It would a minor miracle for both Frome Technical, on six points, and Kemps Hill High (three) — when they meet in a rescheduled game on Monday — for both to surpass Cornwall who now have a plus-13 goal differential.

On Saturday, Rushawn White scored a double while Rajay McLaughlin and Jihari Williams got one each for Garvey Maceo to continue the defence of their title, beating Paul Bogle High.

Old Harbour High, who beat Titchfield High 2-0, also advanced as the second-placed team on four points.

Ocho Rios High came from a goal down to beat Rusea’s High 3-1 in Lucea to top Group 2 with maximum nine points, and will be joined by Maggotty High who were 4-0 winners over Petersfield High in their game in Santa Cruz, finishing with six points.

Dinthill Technical top Group 6 on goal difference after beating York Castle High 7-0 in their game, and were accompanied to the next round by Clarendon College who were 3-0 winners over Port Antonio High, both ending on seven points.

Despite losing 2-0 to McGrath High, William Knibb took the runner-up spot in Group 8 as they finished on four points, after Central High and Morant Bay played out a 2-2 draw in the other group game.

At Cornwall the 12 time champions ran riot over Cedric Titus High, winning 13-1 as national junior representative Morris scored eight times, including three in the fist half.

Shakeem Gibson, Nickane Brown, Mekhi Foster, and substitutes Crandahni Messado and Kavontae Gooden also got on the scoresheet.

Meanwhile, Manning’s School and Manchester High lost their perfect win records after they were held to draws on Saturday, both coming from behind to earn a point and avoid defeats.

Manning’s School conceded a goal for the first time this season in their 1-1 draw at home to Christiana High while Manchester High came from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw with Glenmuir High.

St Elizabeth Technical completed their perfect run in the Round of 32 with a resounding 7-1 win over Maldon High who had also won their previous two games in the round and qualified for the next round as well.
