Fletcher bags brace as Montego Bay beat Racing to extend JPL lead
ST JAMES, Jamaica – Montego Bay United extended their lead in the Jamaica Premier League on Sunday, with a 3-1 victory over second-placed Racing United at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.
The win was the fourth in a row for the leaders who are on 22 points, seven more than Racing United and Portmore United, both tied on 15 points from eight games played.
Jourdain Fletcher had his second brace in as many games – following his double in Montego Bay’s 2-0 win over Molynes United a week earlier – to lead Montego Bay to victory while taking his league leading goals tally to seven.
Also on Sunday, defending champions Cavalier rebounded from their loss to Portmore United last week to beat last-placed Spanish Town Police 3-0 while Waterhouse FC played out a second straight 0-0 draw as they were held at home by Dunbeholden FC.
Despite conceding their first goal against Racing in four meetings, Montego Bay shook off a slow start to score three times in the final 15 minutes of the first half and wrestle control of the game away from the visitors.
An own goal from Racing defender Jimoy Jones in the 31st minute handed the home team the lead before Fletcher scored two opportunistic goals, finishing off quick team moves.
He punched the ball across the finish line in the 34th minute and was in the right spot in the 45th minute to finish off a move from Nashordo Gibbs.
Jones made up for his mistake when he scored for Racing United in the 51st minute, turning the ball home from a rebound off a corner.
Fletcher was denied a hat-trick when his penalty kick midway the second half was ruled out after he made an inadvertent second contact with the ball.
